Amidst the hysteria surrounding the end of the Mayan calendar, a group of early twenty-somethings from Long Island, New York decided that they would make music together. Guitarist Matt Richards began sharing acoustic demos of his strummy pop songs to his fellow bandmates and the group began formulating Matt’s songs together in his basement in Valley Stream, New York. Vocalist and keyboardist Maria Garnica brought life to the rough demos with her melody laden hooks and dreamy vocals. Colin O’Neill provided vibrant guitar riffs and Kevin Doxsey was behind the kit and on bass.
That summer they recorded some songs with Oliver Ignatius at his studio Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen in Brooklyn and the group subsequently played shows as a quartet. Gingerlys met their future drummer Brian Alvarez at a local show the end of that summer. With Brian on drums, Kevin became the permanent bassist and Gingerlys began establishing themselves as a five-piece playing several shows in NYC.
After self-releasing the songs as digital singles, the band signed to Shelflife Records and will be releasing the material on their debut EP Jumprope.
