Johannes Meinardus Coenen. Dutch composer and director, 1824-1899. He studied bassoon at the Conservatory in The Hague, and played this instrument in the royal band of Kings William I and II. In 1852 he moved to Amsterdam, where he became director of the orchestra of the Grand Théâtre and later musical director of the Stads-Schouwburg. He later became the founder and first director of the first professional symphony orchestras in the Netherlands, the orchestra of the “Paleis voor Volksvlijt”, which existed until 1895. He is the composer of a great number of ouvertures, ballets, two symphonies, wind concerts, and chamber music.
