If you’re aiming for immortality, it takes more than a rapid-fire flurry of hits. To reach icon status, you need a discography to rival the touchstones of the genre and, almost as importantly, a label that’ll be your counsel in the moments where the path becomes obscured.
Although the music is ultimately what matters most, surrounding yourself with likeminded business partners, PR teams and everything in-between can go a long way to ensuring your safe passage from project to project. As when everything’s stable, an artist can funnel all of their energy into the material. But through organisational issues, haphazard management regimes or poor scouting that led to signing subpar acts, these are ten labels that had it all but somehow self-destructed when the pressure was on.
