The term 'critical thinking' has been weaponized, specifically over the last couple of years. People use the phrase to explain their beliefs in conspiracy theories and other misinformation. It's often used by politicians and media outlets as they try to push false information to their constituents. It's a shame really.
Critical thinking is such an important tool for someone to have. I hate that the term has been used to wrongly. That's why I loved this conversation with Julie Bogart. She recently published a book called 'Raising Critical Thinkers: A Parent's Guide to Growing Wise Kids in the Digital Age.' As parents, adults and teachers we tend to squash the ability for kids to learn how to think critically. We give them all kinds of definitive orders like, "Because I said so!" that stop them from asking questions and thinking things through on their own. That ability to think is so important as they grow into adults.
Julie's book offers a great framework for adults to help foster these thinking skills in today's kids as they become more and more attached to the digital world. There is SO much misinformation online, but the internet is where the world is moving. We need our kids to be able to think things through.
