The Country Gents are…

Lee Jones and Dan Cartel.

DJ Lee Jones

Lee Jones is from Nottingham, UK. He is now settled near Oxford. He has been involved with House music since about 1989, travelling & working closely with the DiY sound system in the free party heydays of the early 90’s.

After the dust settled from the aftermath of Castlemoreton festival, he found himself living in the countryside near Henley. There was no House music to be found in the region and this drove him to start the Valley Moods idea from the parties thrown in the valley that he lived in. Very soon after, he was noticed by a Reading band called The Electric Groove Temple. For 2 years he toured Europe intensively with them as their warm up and follow-on act, eventually perfoming in the stage show on the decks, throwing in loops and cuts. In that time they played hundreds of gigs in all kinds of venues, from small bar’s to 5000 capacity festival tents.

The Valley Moods project soon became noticed and after a brief spell at a club in Oxford he began a long standing Valley Moods residency at Po Na Na in Reading. Bringing the likes of Charles Webster, Chris Duckenfield, Kenny Hawkes, Fred Everything, Digs & Woosh, Groove Armada, A man called Adam, Chris Simmonds, Rocky, Peace Division and many more to the Reading conciousness.

The Dog Star in Brixton, London gave him a Friday residency for a year which led to a good number of strong connections and many gig’s and parties, including Turnmills, 333 and Bageleys. Valley Moods the night, moved to the Matrix in Reading which offered a much bigger platform for the promotion of the House music faith.

Lee’s recording career began in 1999 with a release on Chris Simmonds’ label Black no Sugar. Under the name The Country Gents, the Nova Disco EP sold out on export alone. He signed track to the Soiree Records, Detroit, compilation album, “Nocturnia 3”. A tour of the US in May began with gig’s in Canada, Detroit, San Diego, Toledo, San Francisco and San Jose The tour was a great sucess.

The ‘Feeling Good EP’ was released on Stuart Patterson’s label, Transfusion. mid 2001 and was very well received.

Time Passes (Darron’s song) was released in January 2002 on Pear Music. “Thanks for the wonderful “Time Passes”. It’s lovely and will be in my Galaxy show tonight. Good luck, Graeme” - Graeme Park

Dj Dan Cartel

DJ Dan Cartel has 18 years experience behind the turntables.

Involved in the party scene since 1990, Dan first used a set of Technics Dj‘ing at a friends house party in Weston-Super-Mare in 1992. Dan started DJ‘ing at illegal raves and free parties in 1994 when in his opinion “The music on the scene had become too ‘Hard’ and something had to be done”.

During the mid Nineties Dan was invited to join the notorious ‘Sunnyside’ and ‘Powwow’ dj collectives, he soon found himself playing to large crowds at club nights and parties every weekend.

In 2000 Dan moved to Exeter and helped form the infamous Deep Cartel soundsystem/dj collective. Putting on “Free Parties by the People for the People”, the parties were set in the beautiful Devon countryside with a music policy of bass-heavy, deep and pumpin‘ Underground House music.

In November 2000 Deep Cartel started their own club night at ‘Casbar’in Exeter where Dan played alongside quality guest DJ‘s and producers like: Simon DK (DiY), Jack (DiY), Digs & Woosh (DiY), Smokescreen Sound system, Andy Caldwell (Naked Music), Marques Wyatt (Om Records), Andy Compton (Peng), Ben Wijay (Just Muzik), Inland Knights (Drop Music), Mr Mulatto and Ben Vacara (BRS/Flat and Round), Lee Jones (Country Gents) and Andy Kinky (Tango).

Since then Dan has guested at many of the best underground house nights including…

• D.i.Y (Nottingham), • Babble (Leicester), • Kinky Movement (Nottingham), • Dizzy Funk (Peterborough), • Fruity Antics (Bristol), • Shrewd (Lincoln), • Duvet-Vous? (Bristol), • Chocolate Jam (Bath), • Pollen (Brighton) • Guarana (Ibiza).

A dedicated festival goer, Dan can often be found playing on stage, in back stage bars or anonymous festival DJ tents. In 2007 Dan turned his hand to House Music production with fellow Deep Cartel member Lee Jones. This dj/production duo are now known as ‘The Country Gents’.

Dan also organised and stage managed the House Marquee at the 7th Sun Festival which brought together over thirty dj/producers from the UK’s Underground House scene for ‘One hell of a party’. . . Peace.
