Jenn Friedman - биография, альбомы, песни, клипы

Jenn Friedman is a self-taught musician from Brooklyn, NY., playing and singing music since she was five years of age.

Jenn’s melodies are strong and memorable, often sung by others long after listening. The melodies move very naturally, and run the gamut from strong but simple to choppy to melancholy and back.

At the root of her music is a need to communicate on a most basic, telling level. She is purposely creating a ground that messes with boundaries a little bit, forcing people to look more closely at themselves and others, She believes that there is magic in the very mystery of music. There is magic in knowing its message doesn’t have to be direct; that imagery and melody can create a concept and narrate a story individual to each person present.

Jenn’s voice is intimate, genuine, earthy. Songs like “Wilted” bring out the high, flowing notes, and songs such as “Captain” are closer to the ground.

The piano is a central part to all of Jenn’s music. By now, it has become her second voice. Her piano arrangements and vocal lines hold each other up like an old married couple and they’re very happy that way!

Jenn has a sharp, carefully sculpted sense of harmony. With it, her vocals create an elegant balance of rich undertones and floaty, airy harmonies. These vocal harmonies gracefully carry the listener from one point of a song into another.

Jenn grew up in a Brooklyn apartment with her parents and is now attending Purchase College in Westchester as a Studio Composition major. She has performed at The Knitting Factory, CBGB’s Gallery, The Triad, The Gaslight, The Sidewalk Café, Acme Underground, and Ozzie’s Coffee and Tea. She recently appeared on Purchase Television’s “Ray Roy’s Variety Show,” as well as doing various live on-campus performances and performing at benefits such as “Take Back the Night” and “Red Cross.”

Jenn developed an appreciation of music early on, singing with her mom who would play the guitar and sing harmonies. She grew up listening to folk artists such as Peter Paul and Mary, Carly Simon, Pete Seeger and Harry Chapin, and volumes of oldies including the Beatles, the Beach Boys, Air Supply, the Byrds, etc…She and her best friend knew all the lyrics to “Leader of the Pack” by the Shangri-la’s. (3 years later it was Rancid’s “Root’s Radicals.”)

In junior high she discovered Nine Inch Nails, Soundgarden, Garbage, Green Day, the Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, Alanis Morisette and Jewel, among others…

In high school and college, she began listening to artists such as Tori Amos, Ani Difranco, the Indigo Girls, Elton John, Joni Mitchell, Dar Williams and Fiona Apple. Her musical tastes broaden every day, most recently with the music of Franz Ferdinand, a beautiful overload of classic rock!

Jenn is very excited about the release of her debut CD. “When I affect people through my music, it makes me remember very clearly why I’m doing this. I want to make an impact. However trite and simple that might sound, its why I’ve always played. It is so amazingly rewarding to know that this music has a possibility of touching someone. I’m just more relieved than anything to have a tangible way of getting it out there now. “
